JEKO Official Rules

Tournament Director & Host: Blue P Icon Justin | steamID: STEAM_1:1:77385682

Welcome! This tournament will decide who will walk away with the Puzzle Creating Crown!

Tournament Overview

Justin's Enigma Knock-Out! Tournament (JEKO) is a puzzle-creating contest to see who can create the best puzzle raffles on Scrap.tf. The Puzzle Raffle Section and the Judges will vote on one-on-one matches of who has the better puzzle until one contender remains. The winner will be crowned Puzzle Creator Champ! (at least, for the while.)

The tournament will run from December 31st, 2019 to January 20th, 2020.

Candidate Selection

Candidates will be chosen through a Google Form to be filled out. The form will ask why this person would be a good match for the tournament, and to provide past puzzling experience if possible. Since there are only 8 slots, intending candidates must show puzzle-creating proficiency to be selected.

Once a candidate is selected, they must send a friends request to Justin on Steam. This is to allow sending of submission forms and a direct line communication, in case questions arise.

Accepted candidates will be notified by Justin through a message on their Scrap.tf profile page. They will be notified on December 16th, 2019 at 1:00 PM MST.

Puzzle Submission Process

After the 8 competitors have been chosen, they are given a period of two weeks to submit their puzzle ideas. Three Google Forms will be sent by Justin through Steam chat to give access. Each form will be a puzzle for Round 1, Round 2, and Finals. If a competitor does not submit all three puzzles before the deadline, they are disqualified from the tournament and most likely not selected for future tournaments.

The Puzzle Submission window will run from December 17th until December 30th at 11:59 PM MST. Late puzzles will not be accepted.

Competitors are able to edit the Raffle Name, Raffle Message & Hints, Answer, Step-By-Step Solution, Entered Message, Link Poll, and Maximum Entries of their submissions. The first 4 listed are mandatory sections to be filled out for every entry. See restrictions on certain cateogories in 'Restrictions on Puzzle Submissions' below.

When puzzles are submitted through the forms, participants must use source text for the "Raffle Message & Hints" section. Otherwise, they will not be accepted.

All submitted works must be original, to the extent of no one-to-one copies*. If a puzzle is detected to be a blatant Copy+Paste of a past raffle, no matter how old, the competitor is immediately disqualified and banned from future tournaments.

All puzzle raffles will be submitted to the Puzzle Raffle section on Scrap.tf by Justin. This is to ensure that the schedule of the tournament follows, and voting is fair.

If a competitor is eliminated before their three ideas can be shown in the tournament, they can either keep their ideas for a future tournament (without having them marked as copies), or they may choose to personally publish them to the Puzzle Raffle section at any time (this is not recommended as Justin can enter your puzzle immediately, and your idea goes without a chance at reward!).

*Of course, if you simply change a letter or word or two, we'll see right through it and disqualify/ban you the same.

Restrictions on Puzzle Submissions

All puzzles must have no less than 2000 Maximum Entries.

All puzzles are set to 2 Days for Time Length.

Raffle comments are always enabled, and the Win Method is always set to Multiple Winners.

All items for the puzzle raffles will be eight (8) Refined Metal, supplied by Justin. Competitors may choose to select a Signature Item to replace one Refined Metal in each of their puzzles. Signature Items can be no more than three (3) Refined Metal by pricing as of December 13, 2019 on backpack.tf. All three items are to be delivered to Justin by the end of the Puzzle Submission Process.

If a competitor is eliminated before their Signature Items can be raffled, the items will be given back immediately following their elimination by Justin through a trade offer.

A Note on Cheating

If a competitor is giving others the raffle passwords or using alts in voting, they are immediately disqualified and banned from any future tournaments. Don't ruin the fun for everyone else!

Any form of bribing, whether audience solvers or the Judges, will be met with a similar fate: immediate banning from current and future tournaments.

Voting & Scoring

The winner of each round is determined by the combined votes of the Audience and the Judges. The Audience votes consist of 66.6% of the total vote, with the Judges' scores making up 33.3%. This is to ensure power to the people, but for the experts to have their fair share.

Within the Audience, there are two mutually exclusive groups: the Solvers and the Non-Solvers. Solvers constitute 60% of the Audience vote, while Non-Solvers make up the other 40%. In order for a vote to be considered a Solver vote, it must come from an Audience member who has solved both of the competiting puzzles while they are active on the Puzzle Raffle section on Scrap.tf. Any vote that comes after is deemed coming from a Non-Solver. It is of note that a Judge vote is always worth 11.1% of the total vote, regardless if they are able to solve both puzzles in time.

If there are less than 3 Solvers for a match, then the Three Solvers Rule takes into place. See the specifics on the Three Solvers Rule here. This is to ensure that no Solver vote is worth over 11.1% of the total vote.

Voting will be conducted through Google Forms, and will require a login to vote. This is to ensure that each vote is unique, and there are no double votes. No email addresses are collected during this process.

Voting will be represented by two public puzzle raffles - one for Solvers and one for Non-Solvers. After voting, voters are taken to a private raffle depending if they are a Solver or a Non-Solver. Private Solver raffles will last 2 days and contain 8 Refined Metal, while private Non-Solver raffles will last 1 day and contain 4 Refined Metal. Solvers are able to enter the private Non-Solver raffle, but not the other way around.

The Judges are:

Audience solvers and the Judges follow the same voting categories (see below).

Individual voting is not a simple as ticking off a box of "this puzzle is better". There are three categories a puzzle will be broken down into:

Each category will be on a selection of a scale of 1-5, and which ever puzzle has the highest sum of the three categories will gain the vote.

For example, say Puzzle A and Puzzle B are battling each other. A person votes Puzzle A to have a 4 in Ingenuity, a 3 in Originality, and a 5 in Enjoyment. For Puzzle B, they give it a 3 in Ingenuity, 2 in Originality, and 4 in Enjoyment. This person's vote would go to Puzzle A because Puzzle A's sum of 12 is greater than Puzzle B's sum of 9.

In the event of an Audience vote having a tie of sums (e.g. 12 vs. 12), both contestants gain a vote. If a Judge's vote is split equally, both contestants gain half of 11.1% of the total vote, or 5.5%.

Bracketing

JEKO is a single-elimination tournament (hence the name, Knock-Out!), with eight competitors in the beginning. Placement of competitors into divisions is done through Random.org's List Randomizer. Users deemed 1-4 are placed from the top to bottom in the RED division, and 5-8 are done likewise in the BLU division.

Rewards

For each victory a contender earns, they win items!

Prizes are not cumulative, that is, prizes are given purely upon final ranking. For example, the Runner-Up does not win 4 keys, but rather three.

Prizes will be distributed at the end of the tournament, after the winner has been declared. A trade offer from Justin will be sent to the respective users to deliver the rewards.

The password to the reveal raffle is "champion". Best of luck to our competitors!
